I've been doing hair for years, and I've spent every one of them learning. Not just technique, but judgment. Why a step exists, when it matters, when it doesn't, and what that decision means for your hair weeks after you leave my chair.

I was raised around this craft.

My mom is a hairstylist with more than twenty years in the industry. At fourteen, she taught me to survive with my hands. At sixteen, I was cutting hair.

When I moved to the US at twenty, I chose cosmetology at Paul Mitchell Tampa because I wanted the full craft, not just one lane: blonding, scalp therapy, color, cutting, and men's grooming.

I almost became a psychologist.

Psychology was my first career choice. I applied twice. I didn't get in either time.

Years later I understood why, and I'm grateful for it. I absorb what's around me. I read a room before I read anything else. That's a difficult trait to carry in a clinical setting, and it's one of the most useful things I bring to a chair.

It's why I notice when someone sits down holding their shoulders a little too high. It's why I ask questions before I touch anything. And it's why a nervous client at Hóla never has to fill the silence to be comfortable. Some of the best appointments I've had were quiet ones.

I learned that the technical part of an appointment is only part of the work. Understanding the person sitting in front of me matters just as much.

Before hair, I trained as a paramedic.

That chapter taught me something I carry into every service: responsibility. When you do things, you do them right. You stay calm, you stay present, and you think ahead.

It also taught me something unexpected. During the most stressful season of my life, a weekly haircut was what kept me feeling like myself. That's when I understood that this work isn't about vanity. It's about confidence.

That's why I do hair.

The two weeks that changed the way I do hair.

Early in my career I was let go from the salon where I'd assisted for a year and a half. Three months into being a licensed stylist, I was suddenly on my own, with a handful of clients and no plan for how to get more.

What people don't realize is that I didn't just lose a job. I lost my method. The salon I came from worked one way on everyone. Same blowout, same process, heat on everything, hair under the hood until it was done. I had learned the system well enough to do it fast, but I was beginning to question whether speed and repetition were the standards I wanted to build my own career around.

So I had to decide what I actually believed in. The first thing was obvious: I would never hand someone back hair I wouldn't want on my own head.

The second thing was harder. I knew balayage was my weakness. My first color correction ever was a balayage I didn't fully have the technique for yet. So I went looking for people who were better than me.

I found Beto Pellegrino online, co-founder of Elite Styles in Miami, a Brazilian master colorist known for blondes. I sent him a message on a Friday asking if he taught. By Tuesday morning at eight thirty I was standing in his salon, having paid a thousand dollars for one day of shadowing and taken the first flight out of Tampa.

He worked nothing like what I'd been taught. No heat. Foils removed with a towel. And every single foil placed at the exact same level of lightness, every time, without exception. That last part is what got me. It wasn't a trick. It was discipline, applied to hair health, on purpose.

At the end of the day he offered me a job in Miami. I told him no, because saying yes meant giving up the salon I hadn't opened yet. He asked me to stay two more weeks and assist him while his assistant traveled, and he paid me back every dollar I'd spent to be there.

I came home and never worked the old way again. No heaters. Towel removal. And a standard for consistency I hold to this day.

That's the foundation of what I'm known for now: balayage, blonding, and color correction on hair that has to stay healthy through the whole process. Lightening is the most demanding thing we do to hair, which is exactly why it deserves the most patience.

The first time someone at the top noticed me.

In 2023, my mom and I went to Orlando to train with Gisele Quintino, creative educator for Truss and a name known across Brazil. Three days of class, then a competition on the final day. My team took second.

What stayed with me wasn't the placing. It was that she saw how I worked, and she remembered. The following year she invited me back and chose me to do the styling for the competition.

That was the first time someone that far up in this industry acknowledged that I was in it. It changed how I saw myself in this career.

A room full of strangers bet on me.

While I was still an assistant, the salon I worked for needed someone to hold its seat at BNI, Business Network International, in the Wesley Chapel chapter. Seven in the morning, every week, standing up in front of forty to fifty professionals: attorneys, realtors, inspectors, contractors. I raised my hand. I was young, I was an immigrant, and I was doing it in my second language.

I showed up every week for a year. One week I gave my eight minute presentation while cutting a client's hair live in front of the entire room.

Then the salon let me go. Not long after, the chapter's vice president called me and asked what I was going to do next. She told me something I've never forgotten: they didn't want a salon sending a stand-in. They wanted an owner.

When the seat opened, I put my name in. So did the owner from the salon I'd just left. The room voted. Almost every hand went to me.

Nothing about that vote was about talent. It was about a year of showing up, prepared, on time, in a second language, in front of people who had no reason to root for me. I stayed in that chapter two more years, and it built the foundation of my career.

That's where I learned what actually earns trust. Not a title. Not seniority. Consistency.

Bilingual, and not as an afterthought.

I work in English and Spanish, and both are fully mine.

English wasn't a class I took. As a kid in Venezuela with family in the United States, English was the bridge to the life I wanted. I lived in it, the music, the movies, all of it, years before I ever got here.

So when a client is more comfortable explaining what she wants in Spanish, that's not a special accommodation at Hóla. That's just Tuesday. Nuance about your hair should never get lost in translation, especially in a consultation where the details decide the result.

The studio is calm on purpose. Lights are low, the pace is slow, and nothing about a service is rushed, because the work is better when it's unhurried and so is the person in the chair.

Even the uniform is designed, not bought. It's a custom Korean inspired piece, floor length to protect my shoes, magnetic side closure so I can move when I crouch, short sleeves for mobility, and built to handle the three things this job throws at you: hair, water, and color. I wear black because I do color work. That level of thought goes into everything here, and the uniform is just the part you can see.

It's the same thinking behind the Korean Head Spa, carbonic acid treatments, and hair cryotherapy I've brought into Hóla. Hair and scalp aren't just surfaces to style. They're something to care for.

You see me every few months. You see yourself every day. So my real job is to educate you, build a plan your hair can live with at home, and make sure you leave feeling like yourself. Confident. Cared for. Heard.
